How To Play FreeCell

The objective of FreeCell is to transfer all the cards to the four foundation piles, organized by suit and in ascending order from Ace to King.

Setup

  1. Deck – FreeCell uses a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Tableau – The layout includes eight columns, and all cards are revealed. The first four columns have seven cards each, while the remaining four columns have six cards each.
  3. Base – There are four base piles, one for each suit, where cards are arranged in increasing order.
  4. FreeCells – There are four open cells available for temporary card storage.

Rules

Moving Cards in the Tableau

  • You can move any exposed card at the bottom of a column in the tableau.
  • Cards can be moved to another tableau column if they create a descending sequence of alternating colors (e.g., a red 5 can be placed on a black 6).

Using FreeCells

  • You can move a single card to any of the four free cells.
  • Only one card is allowed per free cell at a time.
  • Cards in the free cells can be moved back to the tableau or to the foundations.

Building Foundations

  • Cards are moved to the foundation piles starting with the Ace of each suit, followed by the 2, 3, and so on up to the King.
  • You can move cards to the foundation piles whenever they are available.

Empty Columns

  • Any card can be moved to an empty column in the tableau.

FreeCell Tips & Game Strategy

FreeCell is a game of strategy and foresight. By planning your moves carefully and using resources wisely, you can increase your chances of winning.

Plan Ahead

Before making a move, consider the consequences. Look for ways to free up cards that are blocking key sequences.

Use FreeCells Wisely

FreeCells are a valuable resource. Use them to temporarily store cards, but try to keep them as empty as possible.

Empty Columns

Creating empty columns in the tableau can help you move sequences of cards more easily.

Foundation First

Move cards to the foundation whenever possible to clear space in the tableau.
